Whole Dog News

May/June  2014 Newsletter

Hello,  thank you for subscribing to the Whole Dog News - Newsletter.

I am Dr. Jeannie Thomason, a certified animal naturopath and animal aromatherapy educator with my doctorate in veterinary naturopathy.

I believe in looking at the health care and relationships with our dogs from the dog’s perspective. I believe the dog should honored and cared for as the species he is.  I am here for the dogs.  :-)

The truly holistic or naturopathic approach looks at and works with “the whole animal”, in a natural way that ignites the body’s internal healing force and stimulates its natural abilities to heal itself. To just eliminate the symptom is NOT the same as elimination of the cause or dis-ease that produced that symptom or symptoms in the first place.

I am not a veterinarian but a teacher. I do not heal disease, but rather, offer information and consultations that can help you make educated health decisions for your own dogs to bring their bodies into balance and a healthier state.

Heartworms - Death Sentence?

Hearworm BeWareness Month

Hearworm BeWareness Month

In honor of the U.S.’s National Heartworm Awareness Month, Dr. Will Falconer decided to slightly rename it "Heartworm Bewarness month". I totally love the message in renaming it and think we should all begin to call it Bewarness, what do you say, will you join me in getting the word out on the dangers of heartworm medications and the truth about heartworms and how to naturally prevent them?

This the time of year that veterinarians and the drug companies that support each other to put out commercials and send out post card reminders to scare you into getting your dogs on heartworm poisons.

In The News: Heartworm drug resistance

It's Real!

Leading authorities in pet parasites now concur that resistance to the class of drugs used in heartworm preventive drugs is real.  http://news.vin.com/VINNews.aspx?articleId=28284

“We now have proof there is resistance to the macrocyclic lactone (ML) class,” said Dr. Byron Blagburn, an Auburn University parasitologist who did much of the research on strains of heartworm found in the Mississippi Delta, where loss of efficacy to preventive drugs was first suspected. “It’s accepted by the entire industry now,” Blagburn said.

The question of whether drug-resistant strains of heartworm are emerging in the United States has been studied for years. Until now, however, the experts have been careful to avoid using the so-called R word, “resistant,” to describe the strains that appear NOT to respond as expected to macrocyclic lactones drugs.

Heartworm - Natural Prevention

Heartworm - Natural Prevention

It needs to be understood that disease, illness and symptoms of dis-ease come from within the body. A relatively healthy animal will not be susceptible to these things. So the ultimate answer is not really to prevent heartworm (or the Distemper or Parvo virus or whatever), by some artificial means, but rather to work on improving and maintaining good health/a …

Product Review - Walk In Sync

Product Review - Walk In Sync

Recently we were asked if we would be interested in trying and reviewing an innovative training harness that teaches dogs not to pull.   The "WALK IN SYNC" walking and training system. While most traditional harnesses can actually encourage dogs to pull harder because of the “opposition reflex.”  (That’s the reflex that makes sled dogs do what they do), the …
