Our Dogs And The Holidays – Part One

Keeping Our Dogs Happy and Healthy For the Holidays

When I watch my dogs at play, I am awe struck by their perfect beauty and innocence, their zest for life and their desire to make me happy. These reflective moments are times for reverence of things we cannot fully own, understand or create, only appreciate, and be grateful for the opportunity that our lives are shared with these wonderful creatures.

Thanksgiving has always been a favorite holiday for me. However, I have learned that everyday can be a day of thanksgiving and gratitude. Gratitude is a wonderful thing, the Bible encourages it (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Gratitude increases happiness and life satisfaction, while tending to decrease depressive symptoms. And it’s not just good for the giver, but also the receiver.
Dr. Emmons –author of the book, “Thanks!: How the New Science of Gratitude Can Make You Happier” has been studying gratitude for many years and is considered by many to be the world’s leading authority on gratitude. The information in this book is based on research involving thousands of people conducted by a number of different researchers around the world. One of the things these studies show is that practicing gratitude can increase happiness levels by around 25%.

Since our dogs pick up on our emotions and attitudes it just makes sense that keep an attitude of gratitude – not just through out the upcoming holiday season but every day –  It will prevent stress and depression in both us and our canine companions.
