No Safe Dog Food??? Timberwolf Organics Recall

Just when you thought it was “Safe” to feed your dog kibble again!Timberwolf Organics, a natural dog food producer based out of Florida, just announced today that they are recalling two of their brands.
Specifically:Dakota Bison with ‘best by date’ of 12 Feb 2009
Ocean Blue with ‘best by date’ of 20 Feb 2009
Ocean Blue with best by date’ of 8 March 2009

According to their website:

The reported symptoms include dogs refusing to eat, diarrhea or vomiting. While the problem is inconsistent (not every dog eating food from those dates/bag show the symptoms and not every bag), to err on the side of caution have decided to pull the formulas produced with the above dates. Initial testing has come back negative for problems and further testing is pending results. If you have purchased one of the above foods, you can contact your retailer for exchange/credit or contact customer.support@timberwolforganics.com   Read the report on Timberwolf’s site HERE

FYI:

The Whole Dog Journal removed Timberwolf Organics from their list of “approved” foods in January of 2008, because of their failure to divulge certain manufacturing locations and manufacturing processes…

I guess my own personal pet peeve about this food is that it claims to closely resemble the diet of wolves in the wild”.   Hmmmm  okay,  judge for yourselves, here are the ingredients of one of the “flavors” being recalled:
White Fish Meal, Salmon, Dried Potato Product, Chicken Fat, Salmon Oil, Natural Flavors, Dried Apples, Dried Blueberries, Dried Cranberries, Dried Figs, Ground Thyme, Ground Anise Seed, Ground Cinnamon, Ground Fenugreek, Dried Garlic, Ground Sunflower Seeds, Ground Sesame Seeds, Dried Kelp, Dehydrated Alfalfa Meal, Dried Whey Product, Casein, Dried Carrots, Dried Celery, Dried Beets, Dried Parsley, Dried Lettuce, Dried Watercress, Dried Spinach… (the rest is ADDED, synthetic vitamins, probiotics, etc. as the processing/cooking of kibble KILLS any nutrients that were started out with in its raw, natural state.)
How many of you have seen a wolf dig up potatoes, let along “potato Product” or even garlic,  Ever read what a “natural flavor” is?   What about Cinnamon?   Not a whole lot of that out in the woods, where on earth do you find wolves harvesting sunflower seeds, sesame seeds or Kelp?   Dried Whey and Casein?   PLEASE,  that’s real easy to find in the wild, right?   and wolves (or our domestic dogs) do NOT dig up carrots and beets or break off stems of celery out of the farmer’s garden!

Now, NONE of these ingredients will kill your dog however, they are not species specific foods for Carnivores and end up being very taxing to the liver and immune system.

Please read my article on how kibble is processed and the nutrient value of cooked vs. raw foods in our pet’s diet by clicking HERE

So, is there no safe and healthy dog food?   NO,  the only real “safe” and healthy diet for our dogs IS to get back to nature and what Wolves really eat….  RAW,  meat and bones!

But what about a kibble or canned food?   Are you still clinging to your old fears of “deadly bacteria” or your dog choking on a bone?

Do your homework,  read up, do some research.  Here are many great articles and links to get your started on the path to truth about a raw diet vs. processed pet food:
