CBD – Herbal Hemp Supplement for Pets

May 11, 2018

With studies and anecdotal evidence continuing to discover more exciting natural benefits of CBDs from Hemp for dogs, many pet owners have begun to incorporate CBD powder (or oil ) into their dog’s diets to promote general well being.

It has been found that just like humans, dogs (and most likely other animals) have an endocannabinoid system that interacts with cannabinoids like CBD. The endocannabinoid system is a naturally occurring regulatory network responsible for maintaining homeostasis in the body’s many functions, some of which include appetite, sleep, immune response, and metabolism. In other words, the endocannabinoid system aids in achieving or maintaining balance in the body.

CBD powder and/or oil is made from hemp plants that are particular high in CBD, one of more than 100 cannabinoids that scientists have so far identified in cannabis plants. Cannabinoids like CBD interact with your dog’s endocannabinoid system through cannabinoid receptors, which are located throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems and the immune system.

CBD Hemp Powder does NOT contain THC. It is NOT psychoactive and it is NOT marijuana. It will NOT get your pets “high.”

Notice: As with any “Supplement” or use of herbs, I don’t believe they should be used with healthy animals and never used on a daily basis, for the life of the dog. Usually it is best to give for only a week and if no positive changes are noted, discontinue use. If you see noticeable, positive changes, I would only give it for another week and then let the body rest by not giving it for 4 or 5 days before using again.

As an animal naturopath and NR breeder of dogs for 30 years, I believe that our dogs (and cats) being carnivores, should not be given herbs or vegetables as part of their diet and only given sparingly when their body is out of balance when needed. When fed a raw, species specific diet in as whole a fashion as possible, there is rarely a need for any supplementation.

Interested in learning what a true, species specific diet is and how to have a truly healthy companion animal?   You may be interested in a consultation .

A consultation includes guidelines and support in feeding a proper species specific diet and holistic wellness suggestions that are custom-tailored to your own dog’s individual and personal needs. This is particularly imperative for dogs that are aging or with existing health issues, or if you’ve done a lot of outside reading and have conflicting information.
