Canine Liver Disease

Did you know that the liver is the largest organ in your dog’s body (ours too)? The liver actually carries the greatest workload of all the organs. This complex chemical factory works 24 hours a day neutralizing, filtering and destroying toxic substances in the blood and converting the food eaten into substances vital for life.

Every day life can cause the liver to become stressed, overworked, toxic and exhausted. Every day things like a poor nutritional diet, food preservatives & additives, prescription drugs, chemical household cleaners, pesticides (used both on our dogs and on the grass our dogs walks on), etc. all deteriorate the liver, drain its energy and make it hard or virtually impossible for it to do its job.

Once the liver is overloaded with accumulating toxins, its life-sustaining functions begin to suffer and gradually drop out. This places the body in a state of emergency that debilitates & damages all the other organs, leading to numerous chronic conditions. Household ToxinsDr. Steve Nugent, the past president of the American Naturopathic Medical Association, reported that “in the typical American home there are more toxins inside the home than outside the home! Your and your pet’s cells actually contain over 400 new toxins that didn’t even exist 45 years ago and we are losing the battle against toxins!”

Mycotoxins

Mycotoxins, such as are found in processed pets foods over the years, is a potentially deadly fungal toxin that multiplies in moldy grains, have been found in pet foods in recent years. In 1995, Nature’s Recipe recalled tons of their dog food after dogs became ill from eating it. The food was found to contain vomitoxin, a mycotoxin. Later, in 2005, Diamond Pet Foods had to recall large lots of food due to aflatoxin contamination.

When the liver becomes clogged with these “toxins” and is unable to filter and eliminate them and the pets suffer liver damage or worse…. death!

Ultimately, our dog’s health can only be as good as his liver is. An over-loaded, tired liver will affect all the other body organs without exception. It will deter healing, slow down recovery, cause fatigue, weak immunity, low energy, weight gain, depression, ailments of all sorts including degenerative diseases such as cancer, diabetes, arthritis, Addisons disease, Skin Problems, tumors and much more.

Without the elimination of as many of these toxins in our daily lives, along with a nutritionally rich diet that nourishes and assists the body in cleansing these substances from the body, the body will lose its strength and vitality. The immune system will become suppressed, contributing to an increase in illness, disease and even excess body fat .

Internal detoxification is one of our dog’s body’s (and more specifically. the liver’s) most basic automatic functions but in our world today, body systems and organs that were once capable of cleaning out unwanted substances are now completely overloaded; thus many unwanted substances stay in the tissues and our dogs become sick.

Get Rid Of The Toxins

“Detoxification comes in many forms and refers to many different programs that cleanse the body of toxins. basic detoxification begins with diet. Detox programs may include nutritional fortification for the liver, lungs, kidneys, bowels and blood. Or,  the cleansing of the bowels, kidneys, lungs, the liver or the blood, since these are the organs involved in detoxification of chemicals and toxins from the body. The liver acts as an in-line filter for the removal of foreign substances and wastes from the blood. “The kidneys filter wastes from the blood into the urine, while the lungs remove volatile gases as we breathe”. Dr. Ted H Spence, DDS, ND, PhD/DSc, MPH

Here are some ideas of some natural methods to aid in detoxing your dog’s liver and body if you want to give your dog serious and long lasting health.

We must get to the ROOT CAUSE of your dog’s health problems by first removing whatever toxins we can from it’s environment as best as possible, i.e. use of chemical floor cleaners and laundry products, the use of chemical fertilizer and pesticides on the dog its self and on the lawn/ground it walks on every day, nutrition, begin feeding your dog fresh, whole foods you cook yourself (or better yet, feed raw), exercise, fresh air and sunshine daily (weather permitting of course), If you drink filtered water, give your dog filtered water.

We need to clean our dog’s main filtering systems – the liver, kidneys and lungs – of the toxins – the heavy metals and chemicals – that have built up and are causing your dog endless health problems and terrible discomfort by circulating toxins throughout the body much like oil circulates throughout a car’s motor.

So, You need to remove chemicals, and heavy metals from the dog’s filtering system

Rebuild all the flora that has been killed in your dog’s gut and the rest of its body due to antibiotics, stress and other toxic drugs.

Clean up your dog’s contaminated blood

Restore nutrients with fresh wholesome food and supplements.

The foundation of excellent health is excellent wholesome nutrition !

Bring your dog’s immune system that has been so severely suppressed back up and into good working condition.

You can remove toxins gently, easily, without stress and without a huge expense right in your dog’s daily water with herbal tinctures, homeopathic remedies, etc . (click on the link)

The recommendation is to do from three to six two-week cycles to really clean your dog’s body and get it on the road to health quickly. Like clean oil for your car, your dog’s blood needs to be clean in order to feed its body. The older the dog, the more toxins its body has absorbed over the years and the longer it will take to clean its body. A general rule of thumb is one month’s cleaning for each year of your dog’s age.

Second, to accelerate your dog’s road to recovery, you need to add a probiotic such as Fastrack® Canine Microbial Supplement  or Enzymes Pro + into its food two or three times daily for at least 90 days. Thereafter, you need to add it to your dog’s meal once daily.

These supplements add the essential digestive enzymes which allows your little companion’s body to absorb more of the remedies quickly to speed up its body’s ability to rejuvenate. Both the Fastrack® and the Enzymes Pro + also add the “good bacteria” back into the body that has been killed off by antibiotic use and daily toxins and aids in rebuilding the immune system which of course helps your devoted friend return to robust health and vitality much more quickly.

Third, your dog’s heart has been pumping contaminated blood to every cell in its body perhaps for years. Consequently to restore health and vitality, it is imperative you re-nourish your dog’s body by adding natural vitamins and trace minerals to its daily food and/or water intake. For this purpose, Mineral Essence from Young Living is a great, easy to use product as is Positive Health Power Boost, both in a liquid form that is less processed and quickly gets into the dogs system. It is a fact that without trace minerals in the body, adding vitamins is a waste of money as the body cannot fully absorb the vitamins even if they are natural vitamins. Did you know the animal body cannot absorb synthetic vitamins anyway? Without trace minerals you are just plain wasting your money.

Fourth, if you really wish to have a dog with absolute health and vitality, you are going to have to take this necessary step. You must give your dog the most natural and wholesome diet possible. You all know I personally feed my dogs a raw diet and I highly recommend it for ultimate health for you dogs. There are frozen raw diets available at most pet stores these days. And there are now some decent dehydrated raw diets such as Wysong and Natures Variety. If you feel doing raw is somehow just something you will not do at this time, then it is vital for your dog’s health that you look into a very high quality, organic kibble with human grade or better ingredients and with NO grains or potatoes. Remember, as carnivores, dogs were just not designed to eat or to be able to digest grains. Here is the very few natural kibbles we feel we can recommend to you. HERE

Building a strong immune system is crucial!

Most of you readers know by now that I believe a strong, healthy immune system is the “Key” to health and long life! I have many articles on the immune system and how to make it strong and healthy.

While the probiotics, enzymes and herbal tinctures mentioned above, will help in their own ways to boost the immune system, some essential oils, antioxident drinks and Colostrum work directly on the immune system in a powerful and effective way.
