Arthritis and Gastric Toxicity

Arthritis, as with many chronic illness, can be a direct result of gastric-intestinal toxicity due primarily to impaired digestion. Faulty digestion in our carnivore companions is generally a result of improper and inadequate diet/nutrition… Over time, feeding an improper and/or inadequate diet disrupts the digestive process.

The lack of proper, species appropriate nutrition can cause the lining of the pet’s gut to become inflamed. This inflammation starts the whole process of disease.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is often associated with an intestinal disorder termed “leaky gut” or leaky gut syndrome. Usually associated with leaky gut is a wide variety symptoms such as “food allergies” which can create toxicity to the muscles and joints eventually leading to arthritis.
Leaky gut refers to an increased permeability of the intestinal wall, resulting in the increased passage of substances from the intestines to the bloodstream. In other words, large spaces develop between the cells of the gut wall and allow bacteria, toxins, and food to leak in. The body then, not recognizing them, activates the immune system to search and destroy. The result is inflammation.

The use of antibiotics, steroids (cortisone’s) and other synthetically based medications are also considered a major cause of leaky gut syndrome. Antibiotics kill all the friendly bacteria in the intestinal tract along with the bad. The bad bacteria then actually burrow holes in the lining of the digestive tract, which gives way to undigested food getting through and going straight into the bloodstream, hence the reason for many of the cases of so called allergies and rheumatoid arthritis.

The solution – Feed a Species Appropriate Diet and Give Species Appropriate Probiotics
Probiotic’s help restore a balance of friendly bacteria to the body’s digestive tract thus aiding in digestion. The probiotic repopulates the digestive tract with microorganisms that are beneficial, helps further break down food, and competes for space and nutrients with the harmful microorganisms, diminishing their numbers.

Feeding a species appropriate RAW diet and restoring balance to the intestinal micro-flora or probiotics has been shown to alleviate many of the symptoms of both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

The Whole Dog recommends Pet Flora For Dogs because it is composed of soil based organisms that the dog’s body recognizes and they are able to repopulate the gut quickly.
